How a Friendly "Ghost" Can Help Your Business
© 2000 By Mary Anne Hahn
With Halloween bhind us and the busy holiday season just beyond, I thought that this would be an excellent time to let 'Netpreneurs know what a friendly "ghost" can do for you and your business.
More specifically, a friendly ghostwriter.
For those unfamiliar with the term, a ghostwriter is someone who writes for fun and profit, not fame. They come up with ideas, do the research, write the book or article, and sometimes even do the legwork required to get it published-but your name appears as the byline. You get publicity for your business, and the ghostwriter gets paid for his or her services. Everyone wins.
Why would you consider hiring a ghostwriter? Here are a few of the best reasons:
1. A ghostwriter can save you time. Rather than toiling over your next promotional article or trying to get the next issue of your ezine out on time, you can delegate this work (and the stress that accompanies it) to your ghostwriter. This frees you to devote more time to your business itself--developing new products, delivering orders, responding to customers' questions, etc. Think about the hours you spend developing one article or ezine, versus the money you could make if you spent those same hours doing something else.
2. A ghostwriter can save you money. For less than the cost of a well-placed classified ad, a good ghostwriter can both write an article for you and submit it to targeted publications or mailing lists, or edit and publish an entire issue of your ezine.
3. A ghostwriter can make you look good. You know that publishing articles and/or an ezine is currently one of the best ways to bring in new business (or keep customers coming back to your site), but perhaps writing just isn't your strong point. Maybe you even dread writing. Meanwhile, a ghostwriter thrives on it; it's what she does best. And if a ghostwriter wants you to hire her again and again, she'll provide you with only the highest quality writing. With your name as the author, that quality will most definitely cast its reflection on you and your business as a whole.
Where can you find a reliable, friendly ghostwriter? You can either enter the keyword "ghostwriter" into any search engine, which will pull up thousands of writers to choose from, or post an ad for a ghostwriter on an employment Web site such as elance.com, ants.com, or monster.com, which will narrow your search to only those writers actively seeking new assignments. A third method would be, having read a book or article that you particularly enjoyed or admired, contacting that author directly to see if he or she will ghostwrite for you.
If you find that writing promotional articles or ezines is a tedious, time-consuming task, then hiring a friendly ghostwriter might be the least scary decision you can make for your business.
